How much do hot tubs cost?

Hot tub from Villeroy & Boch

The expected costs for your hot tub depend on many different factors, such as the size of the hot tub as well as the fittings and product features you select. Moreover, when calculating hot tub costs, you also need to consider the total operational costs, and not only the purchase costs. This includes the costs for maintaining and running the hot tub. As the longer you use your hot tub, the more expensive it becomes with a poorly insulated model.

In addition to the energy consumption of the heating and the incidental annual power costs, you should also consider other quality aspects when choosing a specific model. But don’t make false economies – after all, you want to enjoy your hot tub for many years to come, and so you should.

Our guide explains what costs to expect with which hot tubs and how they are calculated, and also provides you with information on how high operational costs for your hot tub in your garden or conservatory are. That said, we will also show you that in many regards it often pays to invest in a high-quality hot tub from Villeroy & Boch.

Purchase costs: How is the price calculated?

If you have already started looking into the different types and prices of hot tubs, you will most certainly have noticed the vast range of prices. Low-priced hot tubs are available for a few thousand euros, whilst other models can cost €10,000 or more.

Basically, a hot tub is similar to other investments, e.g. a car: some vendors want to serve the entry-level market and therefore have to compromise on quality to reduce costs. That applies to the quality of the materials as well as the finish – and also has a direct effect on longevity and driving pleasure. Moreover, a lower priced vehicle fitted with an engine that doesn't have the latest technology is more expensive to run.

When you buy a hot tub, you’re not only purchasing a pool, but at best additional quality of life and the perfect way to get away from it all. The patented JetPaks in our hot tubs provide soothing and deep massages for all muscle groups. Many models are available with up to 18 different JetPaks, which you can quickly place in position at any seat and change, even when the hot tub is being used.

Although our hot tubs come with very many standard fittings, you can still extend several series to suit your needs and preferences, such as by adding a stereo system or coloured LED lighting.

In addition to size (i.e. the number of seats), other key factors that have a determining influence on the purchase price of a hot tub include the number of JetPaks and pump capacity. As the higher the latter is, the more powerful and effective the jets can swirl air and water around and therefore provide an intense massage.

We apply high standards without compromise to all Villeroy & Boch hot tubs – from the X-Series at an entry-level price through to the Premium Line that offers luxury complete with all the fittings.

Even the X-Series is a top-class product at an entry-level price: stainless steel jets with different arrangements and functions, an illuminated waterfall, comfortable headrests and various technical measures that help clean the water easily and naturally. You also have the option of adding a Bluetooth-enabled audio system to enjoy your favourite music or playlists in exceptional sound quality. And the optional illuminated jets let you immerse the entire scenario in a beautiful, mysterious light, brightening up the night.

All hot tubs from Villeroy & Boch consist of a durable, robust and fully enclosed structure, which prevents moisture and pests from getting in.

Most of our hot tub ranges are fitted with patented JetPaks, i.e. removable massage units that you can position as desired. So you could experience an intense massage effect one day and then enjoy a more gentle wellness treatment the next day. You can currently choose from up to 18 different JetPaks, which are divided into the following three groups:

  • Wellness Flow Therapy – ranging from an all-over kneading massage through to maximum relaxation with a deep massage for the lower back combined with a gentle kneading of the shoulder area.

  • Sport Flow Therapy – for strengthening muscles, releasing muscle tension or deep pain relief in the entire back or neck area.

  • Relax Flow Therapy – from a tingling factor through to a deep hydromassage or powerful therapy for the back muscles.

Equipped with JetPak technology, our hot tubs benefit from a more transparent structure and excellent power: thanks to the innovative construction, our hot tubs have up to 90% fewer pipes. This significantly increases pump capacity while minimising the risk of water damage. Moreover, powerful pumps press the water into the Aqua & Air Unit of the JetPaks. The air drawn in from above mixes with the water and is pressed through the jets (Venturi principle) – guaranteeing more power for a more intense massage.

Incidentally, about 90% of the pipes are located within the shell of the hot tub and are, therefore, permanently surrounded by hot pool water. This clever principle greatly reduces heat and energy loss so that our hot tubs are significantly safer and more energy-efficient. As there are no diverter valves, the built-in pump(s) provides full power at all seats simultaneously.

Material

Every model has an unusually robust construction as we want our hot tubs to not only look good, but to also last a very a long time. It provides all Villeroy & Boch hot tubs with above-average load-bearing capacity and consists of five coordinated components that we simply call the EnduraFrame™ structure:

EnduraBase™, a closed ABS base, noticeably reduces vibrations and noise. EnduraBeam™, the integral frame construction, ensures above-average strength and durability. EnduraSupports™ increases stability and structure in the footwell and sitting areas. EnduraShell™, the acrylic surface is reinforced with polyurethane foam for enhanced hygiene and a lasting shine. EnduraWood™ is the weatherproof and UV-resistant outer construction made from hard-wearing plastic.

The entire hot tub frame is made from sturdy, hard-wearing ABS plastic without using wood or metal, so it will never rot or corrode. All parts are precision aligned the exact same way every time, with no space for human error. Components like the EnduraFrame™ are built with laser precision and assembled with maximum care. The design includes the enclosed EnduraBase™ hot tub base with handles, cable ducts for the electrical wiring, ventilation slots to keep out unwanted pests and an easy-access external drain.

How high are the running operational costs of a hot tub?

As mentioned at the beginning, you not only have to consider the purchase costs when comparing costs, but also the running costs. And this is where Villeroy & Boch’s modern hot tubs get to play off their strengths once again compared to competitors’ models. Because thanks to a wide range of constructive measures and improvements, our hot tubs are very energy-efficient and amongst the most economical in the world.

That’s also because every single one of our hot tubs is fitted with full-foam insulation, which entails filling all internal hollows with a polyurethane foam. This porous yet very stable foam increases the weight of the hot tub only slightly, but provides the perfect heat insulation thanks to the many trapped gas bubbles. That will become apparent when you compare a conventional hot tub without full-foam insulation with a Villeroy & Boch model, for instance by using images from a thermal imaging camera: the exterior of other hot tubs on the market is visibly heated, but the exterior of Villeroy & Boch hot tubs remains significantly cooler than their interior. This reduces hot tub costs in winter considerably, even though the difference between the outer temperature and water temperature is by nature vast during this season. This way you can enjoy a relaxing and exciting soak in your hot tub and still have a green conscience even when the surrounding temperature is near or below freezing point.

Comparison of running energy costs

A good or – as in the case of hot tubs from Villeroy & Boch – very good energy efficiency is not only an advantage from a cost perspective. It is also important not to waste energy in order to protect and preserve our environment and to protect the global climate.

The California Energy Commission (CEC) has by way of example compared the energy consumption of our A7L hot tub with similar models of renowned competitors. Some of them are also very efficient, consuming under or just over 200 W of power. But Villeroy & Boch’s A7L hot tub leads the way by consuming an average of only 164 W of power. This value was established with air temperature of about 15 °C and water temperature of 39 °C; the actual consumption always depends on local conditions, individual preferences and use. Nevertheless, with running maintenance and energy costs of a Villeroy & Boch hot tub from about €1 a day, you can relax in your tub every day, year in, year out, and enjoy some me time in your very own spa without feeling guilty.
